SNI: Swedish Standard Industrial Classification

The Swedish Standard Industrial Classification (SNI - Standard för svensk näringsgrensindelning), is a system for categorizing economic activities in Sweden. It is managed by Statistics Sweden. Though aligned with the NACE classification system, as is the case with other national classification systems within the European Union, SNI has been designed to reflect the Swedish industrial context. SNI is a five-level hierarchical system ranging from broadly defined Sections at the first level to Detailed Groups at the fifth level.

SNI 2007 (Current)

SNI 2007 is Sweden's adaptation of the European Union's NACE Rev. 2 to which it corresponds up to the fourth (Class) level. SNI 2007 has been in effect since 1 January 2008.

Changes between SNI 2002 and SNI 2007

The changes between SNI 2002 and SNI 2007 mirror the changes between NACE Rev. 1.1 and NACE Rev. 2. In general, SNI 2007 sought to reflect the increasing prominence of the service industries particularly in the area of information and communication technology. Moreover, following increased attention to sustainability and environmental concerns, environmental and recycling activities were also given a more detailed treatment in SBI 2007. In summary, while the number of detail groups in the manufacturing sector was trimmed, 66 new detail groups in total were created across the services sectors of SBI 2007.

Structure of SNI 2007

SNI 2007 is structured into five levels, as follows:

  • Section: 21 Section identified by letters between A and U.

  • Division: 88 Divisions identified by two-digit codes.

  • Group: 272 Groups identified by three-digit codes.

  • Class: 615 Classes identified by four-digit codes

  • Detailed Group: 821 Detailed Groups identified by five-digit codes. As in other national classification systems in Europe, the finest level of detail is defined according to the specificities of the Swedish industrial landscape.

The table below breaks down each of the 21 sections in SNI 2007. Summarizing by broadly defined sectors, of the 821 Detailed Groups in SNI 2007, about 62% (511) are in services (Sections B; D-U), 30% (257) are in manufacturing (section C), and 8% (53) are in Agriculture (section A).

SNI 2002 (Legacy)

SNI 2002 was in effect in Sweden between January 2002 and December 2007. It corresponds to NACE Rev. 1.1 up to the fourth (Class) level.

Changes Between SNI 1992 and SNI 2002

The changes between SNI 1992 and SNI 2002 were in line with the changes between NACE Rev. 1 and NACE Rev 1.1 with several instances of mergers and splits of activities which in turn led the renumbering of several five-digit industries. Most of the new additions were at five-digit level with the inclusion of 10 new Classes and 37 new Detailed Groups.

Structure of SNI 2002

SNI 2002 was structured into five levels, as follows:

  • Section: 17 Sections identified by letters between A and Q. Two sections are further split into a total of 31 sub-sections.

  • Division: 60 Divisions identified by two-digit codes.

  • Group: 222 Groups identified by three-digit codes.

  • Class: 513 Classes identified by four-digit codes

  • Detailed Group: 776 Classes identified by five-digit codes.

SNI 1992 (Legacy)

SNI 1992 was in effect in Sweden from 1993 to 2002. SNI 1992 is identical to NACE Rev. 1 up to the four-digit (class) level, except for two classes (01.90 - Smallholding and 52.49 - Other retail sale of new goods in specialized stores) which are present only in SNI 1992.

Changes Between SNI 1969 and SNI 1992

Following the emergence of the NACE system, SNI 1992 accordingly adjusted its coding format, moving from the previous six-digit format to a five-digit format. Moreover, in line with developments in the Swedish economy in the two decades since the release of SNI 1969, there was a major expansion of national detail along with splits, mergers, and redefinitions across all levels.

Structure of SNI 1992

SNI 1992 was structured into five levels, as follows:

  • Section: 17 Sections identified by letters between A and Q. Two sections are further split into a total of 31 sub-sections.

  • Division: 60 Divisions identified by two-digit codes.

  • Group: 222 Groups identified by three-digit codes.

  • Class: 505 Classes identified by four-digit codes

  • Detailed Group: 755 Classes identified by five-digit codes.

SNI 1969 (Legacy)

SNI 1969 was in effect in Sweden from 1969 to 1992. SNI 1969 is identical with the United Nation's ISIC Rev. 2 up to the 4th level, with the exception of the construction and wholesale/retail trade industries which, unlike in ISIC Rev. 2, were broken down in SNI 1969 providing richer detail for the Swedish industrial context.

Structure of SNI 1969

SNI 1969 was structured into six levels, as follows:

  • Industry: 9 Industries identified by a one-digit code.

  • Sector: 33 Sectors identified by two-digit codes.

  • Division: 79 Divisions identified by three-digit codes.

  • Group: 185 Groups identified by four-digit codes.

  • Class: 328 Classes identified by five-digit codes

  • Detailed Group: 368 Classes identified by six-digit codes.
