NKD Croatia: National Classification of Activities (Nacionalna Klasifikacija Djelatnosti)
Croatia's National Classification of Activities (in Croatian: Nacionalna Klasifikacija Djelatnosti - NKD) is the country’s official system for classifying the activities of business establishments. Managed by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, NKD was introduced in 1997 with subsequent revisions in 2002, 2007, and 2025. Based on the European Union's NACE, Croatia's National Classification of Activities uses a five-level hierarchy (Sections to Subclasses). It is widely used in Croatia's public and private sector.

NKD 2025 (Current)
NKD 2025 entered into force in Croatia on 1 January 2025. It is identical to the European Union's NACE Rev. 2.1 up to the four-digit (Class) level.
Changes Between NKD 2007 and NKD 2025
Since NKD 2025 is identical to NACE Rev. 2.1 up to the fourth (Class) level, the differences between NKD 2007 and NKD 2025 reflect the changes between NACE Rev. 2 and NACE Rev. 2.1 at the first four levels of the system. NKD 2025 reintroduces the fifth (Subclass) level, which had been removed in NKD 2007 but was present in earlier versions. This update creates 687 Subclasses to address domestic needs, including newly relevant industries such as 62.10.1 (Programming of video games) and 71.12.1 (Geodetic and geoinformation activities). Subclasses were also introduced for care services for Homeland War veterans in Croatia: 87.99.1 (Activities of institutions for the care of Homeland War veterans and victims with temporary accommodation) and 87.99.2 (Activities of institutions for the care of Homeland War veterans and victims with long-term accommodation).
Structure of NKD 2025
NKD 2025 is structured into five levels, as follows:
Section: 22 Sections identified by letters A to V.
Division: 88 Divisions identified by two-digit numerical codes (01-99).
Group: 272 Groups identified by three-digit numerical codes (01.1-99.0).
Class: 615 Classes identified by four-digit numerical codes (01.11-99.00).
Subclass: 687 Subclasses identified by five-digit numerical codes (01.11.0-99.00.0).
The table below shows the number of industries in the Divisions, Groups, Classes, and Subclasses under each Section of NKD 2025.

At the Subclass level, the Section B (Manufacturing) is the most detailed with 239 Subclasses followed by Section G (Wholesale and retail trade) with 86 Subclasses and Section A (Agriculture, fishing and forestry) with 43 Subclasses. However, the vast majority of subclasses—624 out of 674—do not provide further detail beyond their parent classes. Most of the 63 subclasses that are distinct subcategories of a class are found mostly in the services sectors. Examples include subclasses 69.20.1 (Accounting and bookkeeping activities), 69.20.2 (Auditing activities), and 69.20.3 (Tax consultancy) which are under the class 69.20 (Accounting, bookkeeping and auditing activities; tax consultancy).

NKD 2007 (Legacy)
NKD 2007 operated from 2008 to 2024. It is identical to the European Union's NACE Rev. 2.
Changes Between NKD 2002 and NKD 2007
The changes between NKD 2002 and NKD 2007 reflect the changes between NACE Rev. 1.1 and NACE Rev. 2 with an increase in detail at all levels of the system. A notable development in NKD 2007 was the shift from a five-level to a four-level classification structure. Under NKD 2002, the most detailed classification level was the five-digit subclass, which served national needs. However, NKD 2007 introduced more detailed categories at the class (four-digit) level—615 compared to the 514 classes and 585 subclasses in NKD 2002. Given this increased specificity, statisticians at the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, in consultation with other stakeholders, determined that NKD 2007 should retain the class level as the lowest classification tier, eliminating the need for further national subdivisions.
Structure of NKD 2007
NKD 2007 is structured into four levels, as follows:
Section: 21 Sections identified by letters A to U.
Division: 88 Divisions identified by two-digit numerical codes.
Group: 272 Groups identified by three-digit numerical codes.
Class: 615 Classes identified by four-digit numerical codes.

NKD 2002 (Legacy)
NKD 2002 was used from 2003 to 2007. It is identical to NACE Rev. 1.1 up to the four-digit (Class) level.
Changes Between NKD and NKD 2002
The changes between NKD and NKD 2002 reflect the changes between NACE Rev. 1 and NACE Rev. 1.1 up to the fourth (Class) level. There was an expansion in the number of five-digit subclasses from 114 to 584. However, the vast majority of the newly created subclasses did not extend the detail of their related class. New subclasses in NKD 2002 include 71.40.1 (Renting of sports equipment) and 71.40.2 (Renting of other personal and household goods, n.e.c.) under the class 71.40 (Renting of personal and household goods, n.e.c.). Legal services were also given detail with class 74.11 (Legal activities) differentiated into subclasses 74.11.1 (Solicitors' activities) and 74.11.2 (Other legal activities).
Structure of NKD 2002
NKD 2007 is structured into five levels, as follows:
Section: 17 Sections identified by letters A to Q. Sections contain a total of 31 Subsections identified by two letters (AA-QA).
Division: 62 Divisions identified by two-digit numerical codes.
Group: 224 Groups identified by three-digit numerical codes.
Class: 514 Classes identified by four-digit numerical codes.
Subclass: 585 Subclasses identified by five-digit numerical codes.

Where is it used?
The Croatian Bureau of Statistics (NSI) is the principal user of the NKD classification system which underpins several economic indicators, indices, and surveys conducted by the Bureau. NKD is also used by other public organizations for different analytical and administrative purposes.
A commercial database of over 360,000 companies registered in Croatia including their NKD codes is available at hitzhorizons.com. Such databases are used for different forms of market and investment research among other private uses.
Academic research has used NKD codes in the analysis of the geographical concentration of industrial sectors in Croatia.
