CZ-NACE: Classification of Economic Activities of Czech Republic

The Classification of Economic Activities (CZ-NACE) is the Czech system for classifying the activities of business establishments. Managed by the Czech Statistical Office, CZ-NACE was first published in 2003 with subsequent revisions in 2007 and 2025. Based on the European Union's NACE, CZ-NACE uses a five-level hierarchy with broad Sections at the top of the system and more specific Subclasses at the lowest level providing nationally relevant detail. CZ-NACE is widely used in the Czech public and private sector.

Classification of Economic Activities (CZ-NACE 2025) (Current)

CZ-NACE 2025 took effect on 1 January 2025. It is identical to the European Union's NACE Rev. 2.1 up to the four-digit (Class) level.

Changes Between CZ-NACE and CZ-NACE 2025

The changes between CZ-NACE and CZ-NACE 2025 reflect the changes between NACE Rev. 2 and NACE Rev. 2.1 at the first four levels of the system. The update increased the number of subclasses from 160 to 716. At the first level of the system the number of industries increased from 21 to 22 due to the splitting of section J of CZ-NACE into two sections in CZ-NACE 2025: Section J (Publishing, broadcasting, and content production and distribution activities) and Section K (Telecommunications, Computer and Information Service Activities). Consequently, all other sections from section K onwards were moved one letter of alphabet forward and most industries have been recoded. CZ-NACE 2025 also increased the number of subclasses from 160 to 716, though only 95 subclasses are distinct from their parent class. New subclasses include 33.18.1 (Repair and maintenance of military fighting vehicles), 33.18.2 (Repair and maintenance of military ships and boats), and 33.18.3 (Repair and maintenance of military air and spacecraft). Production and distribution activities were also combined in CZ-NACE 2025 with subclasses such as 35.30.2 (Production and distribution of cooled air) which merged the CZ-NACE subclasses 35.30.3 (Production of cooled air) and 35.30.4 (Distribution of cooled air).

Structure of CZ-NACE 2025

CZ-NACE 2025 is structured into five levels, as follows:

  • Section: 22 Sections identified by letters A to V.

  • Division: 87 Divisions identified by two-digit numerical codes (01-99).

  • Group: 287 Groups identified by three-digit numerical codes (01.1-99.0).

  • Class: 651 Classes identified by four-digit numerical codes (01.11-99.00).

  • Subclass: 716 Subclasses identified by five-digit numerical codes (01.11.0-99.00.0).

The table below shows the number of industries in the Divisions, Groups, Classes, and Subclasses under each Section of CZ-NACE 2025.

Classification of Economic Activities Rev. 2 (CZ-NACE_KL), 2008 (Legacy)

CZ-NACE_KL was used from 2008 to 2024. It is identical to NACE Rev. 2 up to the four-digit (Class) level.

Changes Between OKEC and CZ-NACE_KL

The changes between OKEC and CZ-NACE_KL mirror the transition from NACE Rev. 1 to NACE Rev. 2. In CZ-NACE_KL, the 31 subsections present in the earlier version were dropped, and the coding structure was revised to align with the NACE format. Whereas OKEC used a six-digit code for levels three through six, CZ-NACE uses a variable-length code (two to five digits) for levels two through five. At the first level, the number of sections increased from 17 to 21. Notable additions include Section E (Water supply; sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities) and Section J (Information and communication), highlighting the growing importance of recycling and information technology. The introduction of new sections also led to the reorganization and recoding of several categories throughout the system.

Structure of CZ NACE_KL

CZ-NACE_KL is structured into five levels, as follows:

  • Section: 21 Sections identified by letters A to U.

  • Division: 88 Divisions identified by two-digit numerical codes.

  • Group: 272 Groups identified by three-digit numerical codes.

  • Class: 615 Classes identified by four-digit numerical codes.

  • Subclass: 160 Subclasses identified by five-digit numerical codes.

Classification of Economic Activities Rev. 1 and Rev. 1.1 (OKEC), 2003 (Legacy)

Classification of Economic Activities Rev. 1 and Rev 1.1, originally published as Odvětvová klasifikace ekonomických činností (OKEC), is the first edition of the Czech Republic's NACE-based classification system. It is partially based on NACE Rev. 1 and NACE Rev. 1.1.

Structure of OKEC

OKEC is structured into six levels, as follows:

  • Section: 17 sections identified by letters A to Q.

  • Subsection: 31 subsections identified by one or two letters (A-Q; CA-DN).

  • Division: 62 divisions identified by six-digit numerical codes (010000-990000).

  • Group: 226 groups identified by six-digit numerical codes (011000-990000).

  • Class: 514 classes identified by six-digit numerical codes (011100-990000).

  • Subclass: 145 subclasses identified by six-digit codes (011210-913390)

Where is it used?

  • The Czech Statistical Office uses the CZ-NACE in the presentation of different statistics on business and economic activity in the country. CZ-NACE codes underpin several national economic indicators, indices and surveys like the annual structural business statistics. They are also included in administrative databases like the Czech business register.

  • Like other national industrial classification systems, CZ-NACE codes can be added to databases of Czech companies and used in the private sector for different aspects of market and investment research.

  • Recent academic research has combined CZ-NACE codes with Merchant Category Codes (MCCs) to nowcast turnover in Czech retail sales and services sectors.
